COVID-19 Changes How You Visit Our Clinic

COVID-19 has changed how we can see patients at Gladstone Park Medical Clinic.

Due to Coronavirus moving so quickly around the world, we want to do our part in slowing its transmission.

The most effective way to do so is by reducing the number of sick people in our waiting room. In order for us to do this we have introduced a Telehealth service – phone or video. The Australian Government has decided this service will be bulk billed until at least September 30, 2020.

Symptoms of a respiratory infection – For most people coronavirus comes on much like a common cold with symptoms generally appearing three to four days after exposure. So, if you develop fever, sore throat, dry cough, fatigue, headaches, nasal congestion and/or a runny nose, stay at home, drink plenty of fluid, self-isolate, and return to work only when your symptoms have resolved. If, on the other hand your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to telephone the clinic on 9330 2533 for advice and a consultation.

To minimise infection risks to our patients, many of our patient consultations can take place in patient’s cars in our car park. However, there will be occasions that this may not be possible, and you may need to make a separate appointment, at the completion of the initial assessment for a thorough normal face to face consultation.

Normal face to face consultations are still continuing and are available to patients at our clinic.

Our doctors and nurses are provided with complete personal protective equipment (PPE), during COVID-19 to allow nasal/throat swabbing for viruses and clinical examination and treatment.

What you should do – If you don’t have a respiratory infection, you can make a face to face appointment as you would normally by phone or booking here.

In many cases, your doctor will be able to provide a complete clinical assessment over the phone or via video. If this isn’t possible, we’ll make other arrangements for you.

If you have a fever, a history of fever (for example, night sweats or chills) OR symptoms of an acute respiratory infection (for example, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath) AND/OR:

  • Have been in close contact of a confirmed case of COVID-19 OR
  • Have recently travelled from overseas with symptoms OR
  • Are a recent Cruise Ship passenger or crew member with symptoms OR
  • Are a healthcare or residential care worker OR
  • Are recent workers in a public facing role (for example, the Police Force or Homelessness Support) OR
  • Are an Immunosuppressed patient admitted to hospital (for example, HIV infection, chemotherapy, post-solid organ transplant or blood neoplasm patients) OR
  • Are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people OR
  • Are in other High Risk settings including Aged and Residential Care, Military Operational Settings, Correctional Facilities, Boarding Schools or settings where COVID-19 outbreaks have occured)

If any of the above apply, please self-isolate and phone us so we can arrange to have you tested as soon as possible by one of our doctors at our clinic.

Requests for prescriptions/ specialist referrals/ medical/ WorkCover/ 3rd party certificates and sick certificates – We continue to fulfil these requests for our patients. All you need to do is call the clinic or book a brief Phone Telehealth consultation with your doctor, and our staff will take care of the rest, often with you not needing to attend the clinic.

We can also forward pharmacy prescriptions, specialist referrals and certificates securely to your preferred provider by either fax or electronic medium.

Before you call us, please check here. There’s a very good chance you’ll find the answers you’re seeking. The link not only provides a range of information, but it is also kept regularly up to date.

Importance of Vaccination – Flu vaccinations are now recommended in early April for everyone, but particularly for those over 65 who are eligible to receive the vaccine free of charge.

We recommend that all patients have their annual Flu vaccine in April or May.

The vaccination will not protect you from the Coronavirus and other viruses but will ensure your immunity is not compromised further by contracting Influenza.

Other groups that are also eligible to receive the FREE Government Funded Influenza Vaccine include:
• Pregnant mothers (at any stage of pregnancy)
• Children between 6 months – 5 years of age
• ATSI people aged 6 months and over
• People aged 6 months and over with various chronic conditions (for example, diabetes, chronic lung conditions like asthma or emphysema and heart disease) putting them at increased risk of Influenza and its complications.

Additonally, Children 10 years of age and older should also be given the yearly Flu Vaccine.

Other important vaccinations – Our clinic makes it easy for young children and young adults – 15yrs of age and older to be administered the Measles, Mumps – Rubella, Meningococcal ACWY and Whopping Cough (Pertussis) containing vaccines.

In this way we are protecting all young people from serious and potentially deadly diseases, which, combined with the threat of other viruses like Coronavirus, could compromise their immunity and could also overwhelm the State’s Hospital System.
